Book
In his ground-breaking literary debut, Don't Blame It On Rio: The Real Deal Behind Why Men Go to Brazil for Sex, author and gender analyst Jewel Woods takes you deep into the lives of men. They discuss why they choose to travel overseas to live the lifestyle that they feel is denied them in America by whites and black women.
Based on extensive interviews with men nationwide in cities like: Houston, Washington, New York, Orlando, Cleveland, Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Charlotte, professional black men "come clean" and talk candidly about why they are living on the "down low." Important questions are raised during this journey:
* How dos Hip Hop influence black middle class male sexualities?
* How does college shape middle class masculinities?
* How are professional black men marginalized and privileged at the same time?
* What is the impact of men's experiences overseas on women?
* What are the profound issues of morality and masculinity that men of color face in the 21st Century?
In addressing these questions, Jewel takes a closer look at traditional notions of the black middle class and the "sexual politics" between men and women. What a "good man" actually means, and the future of the black community is also examined.
Advance Praise
"An important and provocative work which shows how the historical challenges of men of color have drastically changed."
-Dr. Vince Diaz, Professor of American Culture at the University of Michigan
"This is an important book which shows that this class of black men are the trendsetters in the black community. Professional black men are the ones that younger men in the community look up to so they have power in ways that other members in the black community don.t."
-Dr. Celia Williamson, professor of Social Work at The University of Toledo.
"I don't believe this is about women not holding these professional men in high regard. That's justification for a chance to fill a power-void that is rooted in an attempt, most likely unconscious, to simultaneously compete with and seek the approval of 'the man' and I hope people understand that after reading this important book."
- Ulester Douglass, MSW, Men Stopping Violence Atlanta Georgia
